If you are from a country in the European Union
If you are covered by a public social security system in your home country, you can benefit from the European Union's healthcare coverage by applying for your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) in your home country. You can find all the details from the European Commission here. Your host institution will ask for a copy of your EHIC.
If you are staying for a long period (more than 5 months), you can register for free with the French Social Security.
SUPPLEMENTARY HEALTH INSURANCE:
Coverage through the EHIC or social security is limited, meaning you will not receive a 100% reimbursement of your healthcare expenses. Although healthcare is more affordable in France than in other countries, some expenses can be very costly (surgery, specialized medicine, dental care, eye care, etc.). Therefore, it is recommended to take out supplementary health insurance for the duration of your stay. You can contact your usual insurer in your home country for information about their international coverage, or you can subscribe to a mutual insurance plan with our partner HEYME
If you are not from a country in the European Union
For a long-term stay (more than 3 months)
When applying for a long-stay visa, some consulates may require proof of international health or travel insurance, while others may not.
However, once you arrive in France, you will be required to register with the French health insurance system, Social Security.
What is French health insurance?
Any non-European student staying in France for more than 3 months must register for French health insurance, known as Social Security.
Mandatory and free of charge, it allows you to benefit from reimbursement for your healthcare expenses throughout your studies (doctor visits, specialist consultations, hospitalization, etc.).
- BEFORE YOUR ARRIVAL
Before your arrival in France, you need to gather the following documents in digital format. They will be required for your registration with social security:
- A proof of identity (passport)
- A proof of civil status (birth certificate)
- A valid student visa
- UPON YOUR ARRIVAL
Upon your arrival in France and after obtaining your enrollment certificate from our institution, register on the dedicated website of Health Insurance - etudiant-etranger.ameli.fr and submit the main supporting documents:
- A proof of identity (passport);
- A proof of civil status (birth certificate, no translation needed);
- A student visa (and confirmation if possible) or a valid residence permit;
- An enrollment certificate for the current academic year;
- An IBAN or RIB (bank identity statement).
After completing all the administrative procedures, you will receive your Carte Vitale.
The Carte Vitale will be used with healthcare professionals for faster reimbursement and to benefit from third-party payment. The Carte Vitale records your rights and simplifies the procedures for reimbursing your healthcare expenses.
SUPPLEMENTARY HEALTH INSURANCE:
The reimbursement of your healthcare expenses through the French Social Security is still limited, meaning you will only receive partial reimbursement for your healthcare costs.
Although healthcare is more affordable in France than in other countries, some expenses can be very costly (surgery, specialized medicine, dental care, eye care, etc.). It is therefore strongly recommended to take out supplementary health insurance for the duration of your stay.
